Your brain controls every function in your body yet we rarely give it a  second thought.  And, few of us choose foods that protect or heal our  brain.  Here are some of the best foods for thought (literally):

1.  Spinach—More than Just for Popeye

A study of middle-aged rats fed diets with added spinach, strawberry extract,  or vitamin E for nine months found that spinach proved most potent in protecting  nerve cells against the effects of aging in two parts of the brain.  More  research needs to be done but it looks like Popeye was building more than  muscles when he ate spinach.

2.  Benefits of Blue for Grey Matter

The Pleasure of Chocolate

Ahhh, chocolate; arguably the confection with the biggest fan base.  And much research has been done to discover why this is so. Some have pointed out the many medical benefits of chocolate. Other studies have shown that chocolate doesn’t have more mood-enhancing ingredients than many other foods, it may be that chocolate is so attractive simply because the smell and taste brings pleasure…and that’s mood-enhancing all on it’s own.

Our Planet is in Peril

I know that that the health of the earth does not fall under psychology, spirituality or mental health, but I wanted to do this one post because I believe our world is at stake.

I (probably like you) have been watching the changes in weather patterns (the floods, fires, hurricanes, melting glaciers, rising sea levels…) for a couple of decades now and they seem to be increasing in number and strength. (I don’t think that it’s just that the media is covering it more, as some have argued.) It’s not going away.

This summer has brought droughts that are threatening our food supply….

That followed the warmest May on record for the Northern Hemisphere – the 327th consecutive month in which the temperature of the entire globe exceeded the 20th-century average, the odds of which occurring by simple chance were 3.7 x 10-99, a number considerably larger than the number of stars in the universe.

Meteorologists reported that this spring was the warmest ever recorded for our nation – in fact, it crushed the old record by so much that it represented the “largest temperature departure from average of any season on record.” The same week, Saudi authorities reported that it had rained in Mecca despite a temperature of 109 degrees, the hottest downpour in the planet’s history.”

At this point, it may be good to offer a solution. I am no wiser than anyone else. So, I will suggest some of the same things that environmentalists have been fighting for, for years:

  • use alternate and mass transportation (bikes, hybrid cars…)
  • use alternate heating (solar…)
  • reduce energy use
  • buy less stuff
  • any other ideas?

And write to whoever holds political power wherever you are. Tell them your concerns. They will want your vote during next election. If enough people use their voice, they will listen. Let’s use the power of the internet!

Our planet is dying. We have nowhere else to go.

Not only are these foods not good for us, but it puts you at risk for depression, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and obesity. Fries, burgers, and potato chips all have so much saturated fat, and its hard to digest in the body so it puts you in a food coma also known as the “itis” and makes you feel sluggish. However, in  hot dogs its mainly processed meat, and full of high levels of fat and sodium. It has chemicals that can cause cancer called nitrosamine. Next sugary soft drinks are mainly linked to depression because these drinks have so much influence in the amount of endorphin that our bodies can develop, so it puts you at high risk for depression.
